After several months of experimenting with live-stream leaderboards designed to boost audience engagement, YouTube is now giving creators more flexibility over how — and when — these leaderboards appear during broadcasts.

Initially introduced in July, YouTube’s live leaderboards highlight the most active participants in a livestream, ranking them by “XP,” a cumulative metric that reflects engagement through comments, Super Chats, Super Stickers, and gifts submitted during the session.

The three most engaged viewers are rewarded with a special badge displayed next to their usernames, helping them stand out and potentially catch the creator’s attention while live on air.

But after months of testing, many creators have expressed reluctance to showcase these leaderboards during their streams. In response, YouTube has rolled out a new set of opt-out controls.

As the company explained:

“One of the main pieces of feedback we heard from creators is that you would like to be able to opt out of the leaderboard experience, either before or during a live stream. We’re happy to share that this is now possible. When creating a stream on web, deselect the checkbox leaderboard within the live chat section. And during a live stream on web, creators can use the ‘Edit’ option to customize the stream and deselect the leader board option.”

This means creators now have the ability to disable the leaderboard feature entirely — an option that may be particularly useful for those who find it distracting or misaligned with their stream’s tone.

Ideally, though, YouTube still hopes the feature will drive greater fan participation and boost revenue through donations. Yet, not everyone sees it positively — some creators have criticized the approach as overly commercial, arguing that it turns audiences into transactional participants. Others have raised privacy concerns, suggesting that displaying such rankings could expose user activity more than some viewers are comfortable with.

Still, the loudest criticism seems to focus on the fact that the idea borrows heavily from Twitch — and for some, that association alone is enough reason to avoid it.

At least now, creators have that choice.

In a separate update, YouTube also announced that it is rebranding the “Copyright” tab in YouTube Studio, which will now be called “Content Detection.”

The change reflects the platform’s broader focus on new content recognition and likeness detection tools. By renaming the section, YouTube aims to make the tab’s purpose clearer and more inclusive of its evolving detection features — many of which are expected to see wider adoption than traditional copyright claims.

So, if you notice your “Copyright” tab missing in YouTube Studio, don’t worry — it hasn’t disappeared. It’s just been given a more fitting name.
