Instagram Embraces Dolby Vision in Its Biggest Visual Upgrade Yet

A coming update on X could shine an uncomfortable spotlight on the platform’s many troll accounts that routinely weigh in on foreign political debates. X has revealed that it will soon introduce new transparency data on user profiles, including the account’s creation date, the owner’s location, and a history of any username changes.  Users will be able to tap through a profile to view these details, which could make it far easier to identify bots or coordinated influence accounts crafted to provoke, mislead, or magnify polarizing content across the platform. X says these profile updates will begin rolling out in the near future. The company is also working on another potentially significant data point: a signal showing whether an account is using a VPN to mask its real location. All of this information will be consolidated in a new “About this profile” section. It won’t appear directly in the feed or at the surface level of profiles, but it gives users an additional layer of context—helping them understand who is speaking, where they’re posting from, and why they might be so invested in the politics of another country. And that context matters. Foreign influence operations have long targeted major social platforms, leveraging them to spread propaganda, deepen divisions, or undermine public trust in democratic institutions. Microsoft has repeatedly traced large-scale influence campaigns from China aimed at U.S. platforms. This year alone, Google has removed more than 10,000 YouTube channels linked to coordinated operations run by Chinese state actors, as well as hundreds tied to Russian groups. With X relaxing many of its content moderation barriers in the name of free expression, researchers say the platform has become even more attractive for such manipulation—making these new transparency tools potentially valuable in limiting their reach. Of course, their usefulness depends on whether people actually use them. If X successfully raises awareness of these features, it could blunt the impact of foreign operatives: there will always be at least one user in the replies pointing out an account’s true location—or the fact that it’s hidden behind a VPN—which could instantly weaken the credibility of that commentary. But that awareness must spread organically. Meta is taking another step to help creators safeguard their work, unveiling a new “Content Protection” feature on Facebook that scans the platform for re-uploads of your original Reels and notifies you when someone uses your content without permission.  As shown in the example, Content Protection will alert creators whenever another user posts a Reel that shares recognizable similarities to their original upload. Facebook explains it this way: “Once you enroll in content protection, every original reel that you post to Facebook will get automatically protected. Behind the scenes, content protection continuously scans Facebook and Instagram for matches to your protected Facebook reels, whether they’re full or partial matches to your original work.” In practice, this means that any time your content is reposted, you’ll be able to either claim credit or block the unauthorized use directly through your Professional Dashboard. Meta says the detection system relies on the same underlying matching technology used in its Rights Manager tool. Creators can also retroactively protect older Reels by selecting them manually in the dashboard. And once the system identifies a match, you’ll receive an in-app alert. For every match found, creators will have three core options: - Track – Leave the matching Reel visible while monitoring its performance. This is the default choice. You can switch actions later if needed. You can also add attribution links to eligible tracked matches, which display an “original by” label that leads back to your Page or Profile. - Block – Make the matching Reel invisible on Facebook and Instagram. This will significantly limit its reach, though it won’t trigger any disciplinary action toward the account that posted it. - Release – Drop your claim entirely, allowing the Reel to stay up. This removes the post from your match dashboard, and you won’t see its metrics anymore. These options give creators a straightforward way to identify and manage potential misuse of their content. Of course, because the system also flags partial matches, some edge cases may arise—content could be restricted even when it isn’t a direct duplicate. Meta acknowledges this possibility, adding: “Misusing content protection by repeatedly trying to claim and take action on reels you don’t own can result in restrictions or losing access.” Meta also notes that certain content types, such as reaction videos and compilations, are not eligible for protection. Despite these limits, the update represents a significant improvement for creators, aligning with Meta’s ongoing effort to ensure originality is rewarded rather than overshadowed by re-posters and aggregator accounts. Meta has been pushing in this direction for a while. Last year, Instagram announced it would remove aggregator accounts from recommendations and prioritize original content when duplicates were identified. This expanded matching system builds on that initiative, giving creators more tools to strengthen their presence without losing visibility to re-upload accounts. A new wrinkle, however, is the rise of AI-generated recreations of popular clips. If this trend grows, it’s unclear how effectively Meta’s detectors will identify AI-made copies. It’s possible Meta is also integrating audio transcript matching or similar technologies to capture those cases, but Meta hasn’t confirmed that level of detail. Regardless, this move will be welcomed by creators—an audience Meta is increasingly eager to support. Creators can also approve specific accounts for authorized re-use through an allow list inside the app. Content Protection on Facebook is now available to creators in the Content Monetization program who meet enhanced integrity and originality benchmarks. Although Facebook and Instagram have supported HDR video for quite some time, Meta has recently taken a notable step forward, introducing Dolby Vision and ambient viewing environment (amve) support within the Instagram iOS app. For users with compatible devices, this brings a far more refined visual experience.  Showcasing this enhancement on a non-Dolby display is tricky, but the idea is straightforward: every HDR video recorded on an iPhone already carries Dolby Vision and amve metadata. When a device is equipped to read this information, Instagram can now use it to elevate the way that video is rendered on-screen. Ambient viewing environment (amve) provides the characteristics of the nominal ambient viewing environment for displaying associated video content. This information enables the final device to adjust the rendering of the video if the actual ambient viewing conditions differ from those for which it was encoded. Dolby Vision enhances color, brightness, and contrast to better match the video to the capabilities of the display. Dolby’s own description emphasizes its dynamic nature, noting that Dolby Vision: “Unlocks the full potential of HDR technology by dynamically optimizing the image quality based on your service, device, and platform to deliver mesmerizing visuals every time.” In short, this means richer colors, sharper contrast, and overall better-looking video—an evolution beyond standard HDR. Meta notes, however, that achieving this required significant behind-the-scenes work. “In collaboration with Dolby, we’ve solved the perceptible problem of HDR metadata preservation and collaborated with the FFmpeg developers to implement its support and make it readily available for the community to take advantage of.” iOS users may begin to notice these subtle improvements.
