Facebook release new Content Protection Tool for Creators

Meta is taking another step to help creators safeguard their work, unveiling a new “Content Protection” feature on Facebook that scans the platform for re-uploads of your original Reels and notifies you when someone uses your content without permission.

As shown in the example, Content Protection will alert creators whenever another user posts a Reel that shares recognizable similarities to their original upload.

 

Facebook explains it this way:

 

“Once you enroll in content protection, every original reel that you post to Facebook will get automatically protected. Behind the scenes, content protection continuously scans Facebook and Instagram for matches to your protected Facebook reels, whether they’re full or partial matches to your original work.”

 

In practice, this means that any time your content is reposted, you’ll be able to either claim credit or block the unauthorized use directly through your Professional Dashboard.

 

Meta says the detection system relies on the same underlying matching technology used in its Rights Manager tool. Creators can also retroactively protect older Reels by selecting them manually in the dashboard.

 

And once the system identifies a match, you’ll receive an in-app alert.

 

Facebook content protection

For every match found, creators will have three core options:

 

- Track – Leave the matching Reel visible while monitoring its performance. This is the default choice. You can switch actions later if needed. You can also add attribution links to eligible tracked matches, which display an “original by” label that leads back to your Page or Profile.
 

- Block – Make the matching Reel invisible on Facebook and Instagram. This will significantly limit its reach, though it won’t trigger any disciplinary action toward the account that posted it.
 

- Release – Drop your claim entirely, allowing the Reel to stay up. This removes the post from your match dashboard, and you won’t see its metrics anymore.

 

These options give creators a straightforward way to identify and manage potential misuse of their content.

 

Of course, because the system also flags partial matches, some edge cases may arise—content could be restricted even when it isn’t a direct duplicate.

 

Meta acknowledges this possibility, adding:

 

“Misusing content protection by repeatedly trying to claim and take action on reels you don’t own can result in restrictions or losing access.”

 

Meta also notes that certain content types, such as reaction videos and compilations, are not eligible for protection.

 

Despite these limits, the update represents a significant improvement for creators, aligning with Meta’s ongoing effort to ensure originality is rewarded rather than overshadowed by re-posters and aggregator accounts.

 

Meta has been pushing in this direction for a while. Last year, Instagram announced it would remove aggregator accounts from recommendations and prioritize original content when duplicates were identified.

 

This expanded matching system builds on that initiative, giving creators more tools to strengthen their presence without losing visibility to re-upload accounts.

 

A new wrinkle, however, is the rise of AI-generated recreations of popular clips. If this trend grows, it’s unclear how effectively Meta’s detectors will identify AI-made copies. It’s possible Meta is also integrating audio transcript matching or similar technologies to capture those cases, but Meta hasn’t confirmed that level of detail.

 

Regardless, this move will be welcomed by creators—an audience Meta is increasingly eager to support. Creators can also approve specific accounts for authorized re-use through an allow list inside the app.

 

Content Protection on Facebook is now available to creators in the Content Monetization program who meet enhanced integrity and originality benchmarks. Access is also expanding to creators who use Rights Manager, and applications are open for those who want to join.

 

It’s a meaningful step forward, and it will be interesting to see how aggregator accounts adapt as this system rolls out.
