X Rolls Out Text-to-Video and Advanced AI Options

Elon Musk and his xAI team are ramping up efforts to drive adoption of their latest Grok features, with the “Grok Imagine” text-to-video generation tool now temporarily available for free in the U.S., alongside a new option to animate still images directly within the X app.
The spotlight is currently on Imagine — Grok’s newest text-to-video capability — which rolled out to X Premium and Grok subscribers just last week.
To boost awareness, xAI is running a major in-app promotion, with Musk himself sharing examples of Grok-generated videos. He’s also confirmed that U.S. users can try Imagine at no cost for a limited period, though it will remain a paid add-on in the long term.
According to xAI, Imagine is the fastest and most engaging video generator available today. Musk has also teased the launch of a dedicated feed showcasing the best Imagine creations — a move he previously hinted at when suggesting X would bring back Vine “in AI form.” To clarify, this is not a literal revival of Vine, but rather a curated display of Grok’s text-to-video output.
In addition, X has introduced a “Make video with Grok” feature for still images:

This allows users to transform static images into animations, expanding xAI’s creative toolkit.
Instagram is developing a similar image-to-video feature for its “Edits” video app, while TikTok’s version, “AI Alive,” has been live in select markets since May. YouTube also recently rolled out comparable functionality.
While the technology itself isn’t new, integrating it directly into X could encourage more users to experiment and see how Grok envisions movement emerging from a single frame.
X is also preparing to bring Grok Imagine to the web:

On a related note, Musk has hinted at Grok’s growing video game creation engine, which aims to simplify the process of designing playable games.
Meanwhile, xAI has upgraded Grok 4’s PDF handling capabilities:
“Grok can now seamlessly process massive PDFs — hundreds of pages and more — with sharper recognition and deeper comprehension of their content,” the company said.
Adding to the mix, xAI has unveiled a male AI companion app called Valentine.
All of these developments reflect X’s broader push to roll out AI-powered tools — most targeting paying subscribers, though some are available to free users.
Ultimately, the goal is to drive more users toward X’s paid tiers, helping fund continued AI development and, eventually, generate meaningful revenue.
The exact monetization strategy for xAI’s tools remains uncertain, but with potential government contracts and expanded subscription offerings, the company could carve out a viable business model — provided it can spark enough user interest.
The question is whether text-to-video technology will resonate with users to the degree Musk and his team are betting on.
