TikTok Rolls Out AI-Powered Avatar Stickers

TikTok has introduced a fresh AI-powered sticker feature that lets users merge their personalized avatar with an emoji to create distinctive, one-of-a-kind designs.

As demonstrated in an example shared by Jonah Manzano, the new functionality allows users to pair their in-app avatar—customizable directly within TikTok—with a range of emojis.
The resulting hybrid stickers can then be incorporated into your posts and messages:

It’s a small yet intriguing addition to TikTok’s growing suite of AI tools. With parent company ByteDance investing billions into artificial intelligence, it’s almost certain that more AI-driven features will soon be making their way into the app.
Much of TikTok’s AI development happens behind the scenes, as the company’s primary experimental focus remains on Douyin, the Chinese version of the platform. Douyin’s feature set often provides a preview of TikTok’s potential roadmap. With more than 766 million active users, Douyin is a cultural powerhouse in China, blending social interaction, entertainment, and commerce.
And when it comes to AI capabilities, Douyin currently boasts several features that TikTok either doesn’t have or has only in a limited capacity:
Its in-app composer offers an array of AI editing tools, from creative effects to image generation.

Douyin also has a text-to-video function that enables users to create short clips instantly in-app—alongside a separate companion app called “Jimeng” designed specifically for that purpose.
Various AI assistants populate the platform, including a newly launched chatbot integrated with ByteDance’s ChatGPT-style system “Doubao.”
A Yelp-style AI service recommends restaurants and shares food reviews.
These tools illustrate just how expansive TikTok’s AI ecosystem could become.
Douyin is also experimenting with highly realistic live-stream avatars designed to reflect the personality and mannerisms of individual creators. While TikTok already offers a basic AI avatar option, Douyin’s next-generation bots promise to be far more personalized—capable of engaging audiences around the clock without the creator needing to be online.
Meanwhile, commerce remains a central pillar of Douyin’s strategy. The platform has firmly embedded itself in China’s eCommerce landscape, even branching into food delivery. Its latest experiment, “Douyin Hourly Delivery,” leverages location-based services to fulfill rapid, hyper-local orders.
For TikTok, this hints at future pathways that go beyond content creation—integrating AI to deepen user engagement and build a more diverse commercial ecosystem.
In that context, AI-generated emoji stickers may seem like a minor enhancement. But they are another step toward an increasingly AI-infused platform—one where the creative, commercial, and entertainment aspects of TikTok merge into a far more sophisticated experience over time.
Of course, that also means a flood of AI-generated content is inevitable. Whether that becomes a creative boon or a digital burden remains to be seen.
