TikTok has announced a major new milestone in Europe, with the platform now attracting 200 million monthly active users across the region.

In TikTok’s own words:

“More than 200 million people across Europe now come to TikTok every month to express themselves, be entertained, learn a new hobby or skill and find or grow a business. That’s up from 175 million people last year, and approaching a third of the population of the continent across the EEA and UK.”

The figure represents a sharp increase from the 175 million reported last year, and notably surpasses the company’s most recent EU Digital Services Act (DSA) disclosure, which was published just last week. Under the DSA, all large online platforms are required to provide biannual reports on their active user numbers in the region, alongside details of their human content moderation resources.

In its latest filing, TikTok listed 170 million monthly active users across the European Union.

The discrepancy comes down to geography. The DSA report excludes the United Kingdom, which is no longer part of the EU. TikTok previously reported 30 million monthly users in the U.K. as of June, and when combined with its EU figures, the total tips the scale beyond 200 million across the broader region.

This milestone also takes on added weight given TikTok’s precarious position in the United States, where the app is still under threat of a potential ban. The U.S. remains TikTok’s largest single market, with 170 million users, and is also its most lucrative, particularly as the company pushes hard into in-stream shopping. A ban there would represent a severe blow, both in terms of audience and revenue.

Still, TikTok continues to see strong growth in other markets, and its European presence is increasingly central to its long-term strategy. Adoption of TikTok’s shopping features is steadily climbing, giving the platform a more diversified revenue base should it need to absorb any hit from the U.S.

TikTok itself emphasized the broader economic role it now plays in Europe:

“There are now millions of businesses on TikTok across Europe. From sole traders to global brands, TikTok’s unique recommender system helps businesses reach new customers they could not find another way, without needing a huge following. Experts at Oxford Economics found that the activities of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) on TikTok added €4.8 billion to the economies of Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands and Belgium and supported more than 51,000 jobs.”

There’s little doubt the platform has become a significant economic and cultural force. Yet its ties to China continue to cast a shadow, leaving open the possibility of future restrictions in certain markets.

For now, though, TikTok is cementing its base in Europe—a development that will serve it well as regulatory pressures mount elsewhere.
