TikTok Cracks Down on AI Lies with Updated Community Guidelines

TikTok has rolled out a fresh update to its Community Guidelines, sharpening its focus on user safety while making it easier for creators—and anyone navigating the platform—to understand its policies and rules.
The revised guidelines aim to bring TikTok more in line with evolving community expectations, while simplifying its rulebook into more digestible terms.
As TikTok explains:
“Our updated Community Guidelines reflect our deep commitment to trust and safety, with clearer, simpler language, more transparency, and new or enhanced policies. This update builds on our ongoing trust and safety work, including a suite of safety features for teens and families, creators, and the whole TikTok community.”
The biggest changes center on combating misinformation and cracking down on improper use of the platform.
In particular, TikTok has strengthened its stance against scraping, automation tools, and any attempt to manipulate its systems, adding a more explicit warning in its policy:
“We strictly prohibit automation tools, scripts, or other tricks designed to bypass our systems. These can result in content removal, account bans, or other enforcement. If your account is restricted or banned, you may not create or use another account to get around it.”
The repeated mention of account bans in this section underscores just how seriously TikTok takes these violations.
The platform has also updated its rules around AI-generated content, specifically targeting its malicious use:
“Even with labels, some edited or AI-generated content can still be harmful. We don’t allow content that’s misleading about matters of public importance or harmful to individuals.”
Previously, this provision referred more narrowly to “fake authoritative sources or crisis events” and misleading depictions of public figures. The new wording widens the scope to cover a broader range of misuse.
TikTok has further consolidated its rules on topics such as gambling, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, firearms, and dangerous weapons into a single “Regulated goods and services” policy, streamlining its stance on restricted content.
In addition, the company is introducing “rules-at-a-glance” summaries, designed to give users a quick, high-level overview of each policy, without requiring them to sift through dense legal language.
“In particular, creators asked us for simpler, clearer language and definitions, and consistent enforcement so they can follow our rules and build thriving communities on our platform,” TikTok notes.

The “Accounts and Features” section has also been expanded to detail safety protocols for direct messaging, comments, LIVE features, and TikTok Shop.
“We’ve also enhanced transparency about how we enforce our rules. For instance, we explain how we approach emerging harms during crises. We also provide more information about how our policies are applied in different regions to reflect and respect local cultures and norms.”
On the enforcement front, TikTok says it’s leveraging AI alongside human moderators to detect violations more efficiently—often before users even report them.
“Today, over 85% of the content removed for violating our Community Guidelines is identified and taken down by automation, and 99% of that content we remove before anybody reports it to us. We make it easy for creators to appeal removals or restrictions, and appeal rates have stayed steady as we’ve added and relied more on moderation technologies.”
Overall, these changes aim to provide greater clarity and more accessible guidance, ensuring all creators and users understand their responsibilities on the platform.
The updated Community Guidelines will officially take effect on September 13th, 2025.
