Meta Lets Americans Customize the Reels Algorithm
Adshine.pro12/11/20258 viewsMeta is expanding one of its more intriguing experiments in user control. After initially rolling it out to a small test group in October, the company has now confirmed that all U.S. users will gain access to its “Your Algorithm” manual control panel — a tool designed to let people fine-tune the Reels recommendations they receive.

As the interface shows, users can now tap the control icon in the top-right corner of the Reels feed to open the new “Your Algorithm” menu of topics.
From there, you can add or remove interests, and tapping any topic will surface sample videos that represent that category.

In theory, it gives people a far more hands-on way to shape their Reels feed, reducing the influence of Meta’s automated recommendation engine and putting some of that power back into users’ hands.
Meta’s Chris Cox explains it this way:
“We’re launching the ‘your algorithm’ tool on Reels today in the U.S. and will roll out soon to all English-speaking users — a big step towards a more controllable experience. We’ve done a bunch of work on the tech under the hood and we will continue to refine these tools, but already it’s quite powerful to steer your recommendations towards your specific interests.”
There’s no denying the appeal. People like the idea of being able to decide what they see, and having the option alone gives users a sense of agency.
But there’s an inherent trade-off for Meta here. Reels’ explosive growth is largely powered by algorithmic suggestions — the more the system learns, the more people scroll. Giving users the ability to disrupt that flow could, in theory, dampen engagement.
Then again…
History shows that people rarely use these kinds of controls in any meaningful way. Whether it’s privacy settings, data protections, feed preferences, or algorithm filters, users consistently ask for more control and then seldom touch the settings once they exist. The reassurance is often more important than the feature itself.
Most people today simply want to open the app and start scrolling, letting the system do the heavy lifting. Meta knows this, and that’s likely why it’s comfortable offering the option — the risk to overall engagement is probably minimal.
Still, it’ll be worth watching whether users actually adopt these tools and begin customizing their Reels feeds more aggressively.
Meta is also adding a social twist: Instagram says you’ll be able to share your algorithm interests to your Story, letting friends and followers see exactly what you’re into.
So yes — your personalized algorithm may soon become part of your public identity.
