Meta announces its new billion-dollar undersea cable project

To bring Mark Zuckerberg’s grand vision of AI “superintelligence” to life, the world will need more than advanced algorithms — it will need faster, more powerful global connectivity. Without the necessary bandwidth and infrastructure, such a vision would remain little more than a futuristic dream.
And in pursuit of that goal, Meta has unveiled a new subsea cable initiative, this time targeting the Asia-Pacific region — a vast network designed to dramatically expand internet capacity and pave the way for next-generation digital access.
Meta’s newest major subsea project is called “Candle,” and it aims to interconnect the islands of the Asia-Pacific with unprecedented speed and scale.
According to Meta:
“Candle will be the largest capacity cable in APAC, bringing increased connectivity to Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, in 2028. Spanning 8,000 kilometers, Candle will connect over 580 million people with 570 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity.”
Developed in collaboration with regional telecommunications partners, Candle will employ 24-fiber-pair cable technology — a sophisticated setup that allows for higher data throughput and more reliable network performance across one of the most digitally active regions in the world.
As the accompanying map illustrates, Candle is just the latest addition to Meta’s growing web of global subsea infrastructure investments.
The company’s most ambitious undertaking to date, “Project Waterworth,” is on track to connect five continents through a 50,000-kilometer cable — the longest subsea project ever attempted.
In parallel, Meta has backed other key initiatives, including “Bifrost” and “Echo,” which together have boosted transpacific network capacity by 70%. Its “Apricot” cable already links Japan, Taiwan, and Guam, and will soon extend to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore.
Together, these projects represent the digital arteries of the future — a network built to deliver faster access, greater efficiency, and the technological foundation for innovations like artificial intelligence and real-time data processing.
All of this ties back to Zuckerberg’s ultimate goal: making personal AI “superintelligence” universally accessible.
Of course, that ambition comes with massive logistical challenges — enormous energy demands, complex engineering, and the need for vast increases in data transmission capacity. Each new cable, each kilometer of fiber laid beneath the ocean, brings that vision a little closer to reality.
At the same time, it also consolidates Meta’s position as a central force in shaping the digital infrastructure of the modern world. While these initiatives are officially joint efforts with governments and local authorities, there’s no denying that Meta’s influence in the global connectivity space is expanding rapidly.
If Zuckerberg’s wager on AI and infrastructure succeeds, Meta could move beyond being just a social media titan — it could emerge as one of the most powerful companies on Earth, with the cables beneath the ocean quite literally carrying the world’s digital future.
