Instagram’s rolling out yet another tool to boost content visibility, this time allowing users to share any publicly posted Story directly to their own Stories feed — even if they weren’t tagged in it.

As the example shows, you can now re-share a public Story with full creator credit, giving the feature the feel of a Stories-native “repost” button.

 

It’s a simple update, but a significant one for distribution. Until now, Story resharing was only available when you were tagged. This expansion opens the door for wider amplification, letting creators, brands, and everyday users push more content to their audiences with a single tap.

 

It also builds on the repost feature Instagram launched in August, which enabled users to reshare Reels and feed posts.

The goal is straightforward: if Instagram makes reposting easier, fewer people will download, screenshot, or re-upload content, which often strips away the original creator’s credit. It also helps reduce the influence of aggregator accounts — something Instagram has been trying to curb — by funneling traffic back to the people who made the content in the first place.

 

And that matters more than ever. Only a relatively small percentage of users actually publish content. As X highlighted a couple of years ago, just 20% of its users ever post anything at all, and most simply scroll. Social platforms across the board reflect this shift, especially as people increasingly prefer private DMs over public sharing. That means original creators are a scarce resource — and Instagram needs to keep them motivated.

 

By ensuring that credit stays intact, and by giving users easy ways to boost creator posts, Instagram strengthens the ecosystem that keeps its platform alive.

 

Brands also stand to benefit: more users resharing Stories means more chances for branded content to spread organically.

 

Of course, someone out there will inevitably try to exploit the feature, but Instagram clearly believes the trade-off is worth it.

 

Overall, it’s a small but meaningful update that reinforces Instagram’s push toward more creator-friendly, credit-conscious sharing.
