Instagram Finally Lands on iPad After Years of Waiting

After years of requests from users, Instagram has finally delivered: a dedicated iPad version of its app, tailored for the larger screen experience.

As the example shows, the new app isn’t just a resized version of the standard Instagram. It’s been purpose-built for the iPad, offering the platform’s full suite of features with added functionality designed specifically for the bigger format.
One notable shift: the iPad app launches directly into the Reels feed, much like TikTok.
As Instagram explained:
“Instagram has always been the place where people connect over creativity, and Reels has become a primary way people discover and share entertaining content. With Instagram for iPad, we’ve redesigned the experience to reflect how people use bigger screens today – for lean back entertainment. Now, when you open the app, you’ll drop into Reels, so you can get the entertaining content you love on a bigger screen.”
So while all the familiar features remain—Stories at the top, feeds, and messaging—the emphasis here is clearly on Reels.
And that makes sense. Users are devoting more and more time to video on Instagram. Meta recently reported that overall video watch time on the platform has grown 20% year-over-year, and back in April, it revealed that Reels now account for half of all time spent in the app.
In other words, Instagram’s audience is increasingly video-first. Launching straight into Reels on iPad feels less like an experiment than a glimpse at the platform’s broader direction.
Instagram has also introduced a new “Following” tab on iPad, offering users another way to browse content.

Beyond that, the company has reworked its user interface to better utilize the larger display:
“We’ve made it easier to catch up on your messages and notifications with layouts that display both tabs. When you watch reels, you can expand the comments while the reel stays at full size, making it easy to catch up on the best reactions without missing a moment.”

So this isn’t just a reformatting—it’s a version of Instagram custom-built for the tablet audience.
The real test will be how users respond to the app opening with Reels front and center. Given current consumption patterns, one suspects this design could eventually make its way to all versions of Instagram.
Instagram for iPad is now rolling out globally on devices running iPadOS 15.1 and later. The company also confirmed that this new tablet design will be extended to Android tablets in the near future.
